SQL Azure Will Dominate the Cloud

MS SQL Server flies to the sky

With SQL Azure Microsoft's SQL Server enters the AZURE environment providing similar services as its ground based product. The Community Technology Preview is available for download on registering but I am yet to get mine. For details of why and how, access the team blog at

SQL AZURE CTP's main technical features:

  • Relational data model supporting many features of T-SQL
  • Full support for data access API's: ODBC
  • ADO.NET and PHP(Version 5.3)  [PHP is recognized!]support

Other operationally important features:

  • Self-provisioning (flexi configuration of resources), ease of recovery from disaster
  • DBA's not required
  • Easy Migration of Line of business(LOB) from ground to cloud

SQL Azure is free as a teaser but you have to pay if you need it when it comes of age.

Web edition with 1GB relational data at $9.99/month appears to be the expected cost.

Get your  copy of SQL Azure here. Good luck as you cruise in the clouds.
